Tesla Shuts Down Dojo Supercomputer Team: A Major Shift in Its AI Strategy

Published On: August 8, 2025

In a surprising move, Tesla has officially disbanded its Dojo supercomputer team, signaling a major shift in the company’s approach to artificial intelligence. Once considered a cornerstone of Tesla’s future in autonomous driving and robotics, the Dojo project is now being quietly phased out. This decision comes amid broader restructuring efforts and a renewed focus on external partnerships.

What Was the Dojo Supercomputer?

Dojo was Tesla’s custom-built supercomputer designed to train AI models using vast amounts of video data collected from its fleet of vehicles. At its core was the D1 chip, developed in-house to deliver high-performance computing tailored specifically for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Optimus robot programs.

The project was ambitious. Tesla aimed to reduce its reliance on external chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD, and instead build a vertically integrated AI infrastructure. Analysts at Morgan Stanley even projected that Dojo could add as much as $500 billion to Tesla’s market value.

Why Tesla Is Pulling the Plug

The decision to shut down Dojo came directly from CEO Elon Musk. According to reports, Musk concluded that maintaining two separate AI chip architectures—one for training (Dojo) and one for inference (AI5/AI6)—was inefficient. By consolidating efforts around inference chips, Tesla hopes to streamline development and reduce costs.

Peter Bannon, Tesla’s Vice President of hardware design engineering and the head of the Dojo project, is leaving the company. Other team members are being reassigned to different compute and data center initiatives.

Tesla’s New Direction: Strategic Partnerships

With Dojo out of the picture, Tesla is now leaning heavily on external partners to support its AI infrastructure. These include:

  • Nvidia: Providing GPU-based compute power for training AI models.
  • AMD: Supporting Tesla’s broader computing needs.
  • Samsung Electronics: Manufacturing Tesla’s next-generation AI6 inference chips under a $16.5 billion deal.

Elon Musk recently confirmed that Tesla’s future chips will be “excellent for inference and at least pretty good for training,” suggesting that the company is confident in its new direction.

The Emergence of DensityAI

Interestingly, the end of Dojo has given rise to a new startup: DensityAI. Founded by former Tesla engineers Ganesh Venkataramanan, Bill Chang, and Ben Floering, DensityAI is focused on developing advanced chips and software for robotics, autonomous systems, and data centers.

This spin-off could become a major player in the AI hardware space, especially as demand for specialized chips continues to grow across industries.

What This Means for Tesla’s Future

Tesla’s decision to unwind Dojo reflects a broader strategic pivot. The company is facing increased competition in the electric vehicle market, declining sales, and internal restructuring. By focusing on scalable AI solutions and external partnerships, Tesla is repositioning itself not just as a carmaker, but as a leader in AI and robotics.

While some may view the shutdown of Dojo as a setback, others see it as a pragmatic move that allows Tesla to focus on delivering real-world AI products—like robotaxis and humanoid robots—more efficiently.

The end of the Dojo supercomputer

Dojo supercomputer project marks the close of one chapter in Tesla’s AI journey, but it also opens the door to new possibilities. With powerful partners, a renewed focus on inference chips, and a growing ecosystem of AI talent, Tesla remains a key player in the race to build smarter, more autonomous technologies.

Whether this pivot accelerates Tesla’s ambitions or slows them down remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the company is not stepping away from AI—it’s doubling down on a new strategy.
